PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Devils Classic, held at the University of the Sciences' Bobby Morgan Arena Saturday afternoon. The Cougars lost to Southern Connecticut State 30-21, 30-25, 30-20 in the day's first match, then fell to American International 30-19, 30-21, 30-25. The results give Caldwell an overall record of 0-4 on the season.
Against SCSU, the Cougars were led by freshmen Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham), left, and Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), who tallied nine kills apiece to help the team match its season high of 29 kills. Freshman setter Kendra Kane (Secaucus, NJ/Lacordaire Academy) recorded a career-best 25 assists to go with 11 digs, while junior Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) had 15 digs. Nekane Mendizabal and Marcia Hollingsworth each had nine kills to pace Southern Connecticut, which hit .255 for the match.
In the day's final match against AIC, freshman Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) had a team-high seven kills, Francois recorded four solo blocks and sophomore Elizabeth Newcomb (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) had eight digs in a losing effort. Candace Joseph led AIC with eight kills.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Francois and Ciesla were selected to the all-Tournament team by the head coaches of the teams in the tournament.
The Cougars return home on Tuesday, Sept. 11 to face Molloy College in a non-conference match. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
