CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 loss to Wilmington College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate conference match Wednesday evening at the George R. Newman Center. The victory is the first of the season for the Wildcats (1-4 overall, 1-0 CACC), while the Cougars start the year with a 0-1 record.
The Cougars, who started five freshmen, trailed for most of the match. But in the third game, neither team led by more than two points, with Caldwell pulling to within 19-18. Wilmington wrapped up the match at that point, scoring 10 of the next 11 points for a three-game victory.
Freshman outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) led Caldwell with 11 kills in her collegiate debut. Freshman setter Kendra Kane (Secaucus, NJ/Lacordaire Acad.) recorded 22 assists and had eight digs, with junior Laura DeVico (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack) and sophomore Elizabeth Newcomb (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) also recording eight digs apiece. Katie Mason led the Wildcats with 12 kills. Cheyann Gilroy dished out 34 assists in the win.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 at the University of the Sciences Invitational.
