CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) scored twice in the second half to help the Caldwell College women's soccer team overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat Bloomfield College, 2-1 Thursday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at Caldwell Field. The win is the first at home this year for the Cougars, who improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Bloomfield falls to 2-5, 0-1 CACC with the loss.
Lauren Kohler put the Deacons up 1-0 when she collected a long pass from Daniela Sofianakos and scored from about 12 yards out in the 23rd minute. Caldwell battled back to tie the game in the 49th minute on a long throw-in by freshman Morgan Frankenfield (Coplay, NJ/Whitehall Coplay) that Paknis deflected into the goal. With the Cougars controlling play for the majority of the second half, Paknis finally put Caldwell ahead to stay. In the 62nd minute, Paknis and senior forward Brook DeLucca (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) worked a give-and-go up the middle that sent Paknis into the penalty area. Paknis lifted a shot that just cleared goalkeeper Danielle Blumberg and went into the goal for her team-leading fourth tally of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell) and the Caldwell back line held firm to wrap up the victory. Hoenig made six saves in the win, while Blumberg recorded eight saves to Bloomfield, which was out-shot 25-14 for the game.
The Cougars look to continue their winning ways when they host Queens College in a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 23. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
