OAKDALE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost a non-conference match to No. 7 Dowling, 3-1 Thursday afternoon. The Cougars, who fell to 24th-ranked LeMoyne College earlier this week, are now 8-5-3 on the season. The defending national champion Lions improve to 11-2-3 with the victory.
The game remained scoreless until the 62nd minute, when Samba Traore scored for Dowling for a 1-0 lead. Moussa Keita made it 2-0 in the 69th minute with his third goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, senior defender Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) scored for Caldwell off a corner kick to pull the Cougars to within a goal. But with 1:11 remaining, Marcus Come found the net for his 10th goal of the year to put the game out of reach. Caldwell was forced to play with 10 men for the final 28 minutes after a player received a red card and was ejected from the game.
Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made a career-high 10 saves in goal as the Cougars were out-shot 27-10 in the game. Nemanja Veljovic recorded two saves for Dowling.
The Cougars play their final home regular-season game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Holy Family University. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
