CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior defender Jessica Davis (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), pictured, scored on a free kick in the 114th minute as the Caldwell College women's soccer team defeated Wilmington College, 3-2 in double overtime in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victory ends the Cougars' four-game losing streak and improves their overall record to 5-7, including a 3-3 mark in the conference. The Wildcats drop to 7-5, 3-4 CACC.
Caldwell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, when sophomore midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) one-timed a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The game remained 1-0 into the second half until Colby Bugda finished a pass from Begum Malali to tie the game in the 50th minute. Bugda tallied her second goal of the contest in the 70th minute, scoring from 15 yards out off a pass from Nicole Meis to put the Wildcats ahead 2-1.
But the Cougars battled back and tied the game again in the 82nd minute. Junior midfielder Carla Bleiler (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) deflected a Davis free kick to senior midfielder Victoria Aguilera (Merida, Venezuela/Saucon Valley), who headed the ball into the goal for her fourth tally of the year. The game remained tied through regulation and the first overtime period. Then 3:34 into the second overtime, Davis took a free kick to the right of the goal from 30 yards out and fired the ball over goalkeeper Catie Joynes and just under the crossbar for the game-winner. It was Davis' first goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Richelle Morse (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) made five saves to preserve the win, while Joynes recorded five saves for Wilmington.
The Cougars play another CACC match at home on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when they host Dominican College. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
