RINDGE, N.H. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2006 season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Bridgeport at the Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic Saturday afternoon at Sodexho Field. Senior forward Bard Skjelstad (Bodo, Norway) scored what proved to be the game winner in the 29th minute to help the Cougars improve to 1-1. With the loss, the Purple Knights fall to 0-4.
Skjelstad notched Caldwell's first goal of 2006 when sophomore forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) headed a throw-in by junior defender Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) to Skjelstad at the top of the penalty area to the left of the goal. Skjelstad turned and blasted a volley just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead. Caldwell added a second goal in the 49th minute, when a corner kick by senior midfielder Jorge Ibarcena (Lima, Peru) bounced off Bridgeport goalkeeper Mike Tester, deflected off a defender and went into the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made three saves to earn his second career shutout for Caldwell. Tester made two saves for the Purple Knights.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when they play at Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game. The match is set for 4:00 p.m.
