CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior midfielder Carla Bleiler (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) tallied a goal and an assist, and senior goalkeeper Richelle Morse (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) made five saves as the Caldwell College women's soccer team defeated Mansfield University, 2-0 in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars improved to 4-3 with the win, while Mansfield dropped to 1-7 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars scored the first goal of the game midway through the second half. Bleiler dribbled down the right side and launched a shot from 25 yards that went over Mountaineer goalkeeper Justine Segear and tucked just under the crossbar. The goal was Bleiler's third in two days and proved to be her second game-winner in as many games. Bleiler, a two-time first team all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference selection, picked up her first assist of the season when her cross into the penalty area was headed into the goal by senior midfielder Victoria Aguilera (Merida, Venezuela/Saucon Valley) in the 74th minute. It was Aguilera's third goal of the year and her second in two games.
The Mountaineers held an 18-8 advantage in shots while taking eight corner kicks, but Morse and the Cougar defense held Mansfield without a goal. The shutout is Morse's second of the season. Segear made three saves for the Mountaineers in the loss.
The Cougars look to make it three wins in a row when they play a non-conference game at N.Y.I.T. on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Old Westbury, N.Y.
