BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team kicked off the 2006 season with a 4-0 loss to Bryant University Friday afternoon at the Pace University Tournament. The Cougars surrendered three second-half goals to fall to 0-1, while the Bulldogs, ranked 25th in the NSCAA/adidas Division II Preseason Poll, improved to 1-0.
The game remained scoreless until the 24th minute, when a Bryant corner kick deflected off a pair of Caldwell defenders and into the net for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. The Cougars held off the Bulldogs for the rest of the first half and into the second, thanks to a strong defensive effort and the goalkeeping of senior Richelle Morse (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley). But in the 54th minute, Kellie Barker collected a loose ball off another Bryant corner kick and scored from 15 yards out to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. Then in the 81st minute, Casey Grange put the game out of reach with a pair of goals just 26 seconds apart for a 4-0 advantage.
Morse finished with 11 saves on the day, while Jessica Neales made two saves for Bryant. Sophomore Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) and junior Tory Marcus (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) each had one shot on goal for Caldwell.
The Cougars continue play at the Pace Tournament on Saturday when they take on the host Setters beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Pace's Briarcliff campus.
