WOMEN'S HOOPS SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO BLOOMFIELD

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost to Bloomfield College, 74-56 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday evening at Bloomfield. The result ends the season for the Cougars, who finish with a record of 8-20 overall. The third-seeded Deacons (20-8) advance to Friday's semifinal against No. 2 University of Sciences, which is hosting the CACC Tournament semifinals and finals.

Bloomfield broke open a close game with a 10-0 run midway through the first half that made the score 20-10 at the 9:51 mark. Trailing 34-23 with a minute to go in the first period, junior guard Amy Ransom (Chattanooga, TN/Notre Dame), pictured, buried a three-pointer, then hit a pair of free throws with 25 second left to cut the deficit to six, 34-28. Bloomfield's DeAnjole Felton closed out the half with two free throws to give the Deacons a 36-28 lead at the break.

A 12-3 Bloomfield run to open the half gave the Deacons a 48-31 lead with 14:40 left in the game. The Cougars responded with nine straight points capped by two free throws from junior guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) that made the score 48-40. But Caldwell would get no closer, as the Deacons led by as many as 21 points to defeat the Cougars for the third time this season and the sixth straight time over the past three years.

Ransom led Caldwell with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. The Cougars also received a team-best 13 rebounds and nine points from sophomore guard Phylicia Holmes (Roselle, NJ/Roselle), and 11 boards and three blocks from sophomore forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill). Marissa Franklin paced Bloomfield with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
