MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS CACC BATTLE AT HOLY FAMILY

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end as the Cougars lost to Holy Family University, 67-55 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at the Campus Center. The loss, which was Caldwell's first CACC defeat in six games on the road this season, dropped the Cougars' overall record to 11-10, including a conference mark of 7-6. The Tigers completed the season sweep of Caldwell to improve to 12-7, 8-4 CACC.

The Cougars held the upper hand for most of the first half, leading by as many as seven points during the opening period. After a lay-up by senior forward Teren Scudder (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) gave Caldwell a 24-19 advantage with 4:48 to go in the half, seven straight points by the Tigers gave the hosts their first lead of the game, 26-24 with two minutes on the clock. Freshman guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco Prep) answered for the Cougars with a three-pointer and a lay-up to regain the lead. Ryan Lancaster's basket at the buzzer made the halftime score 29-28 in favor of Caldwell.

After Lancaster made two free throws to put the Tigers back in front 33 seconds into the second half, senior guard Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.), pictured, drained back-to-back threes, followed by a three-pointer from junior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) that gave Caldwell a 38-30 lead. Kelly capped the 11-0 run with a lay-up that had Caldwell leading 40-30 with 16:35 remaining. Momentum then swung in favor of Holy Family, as the Tigers reeled off a 26-5 spurt to take over the game and lead 56-45 with 7:38 left in the contest. The Tigers would lead by as many as 17 points as the Cougars got no closer than nine the rest of the way. Caldwell shot just 22.6 percent from the field in the second half, compared to 48.0 percent for Holy Family.

Kelly led the Cougars with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Augustin finished with a career-high 11 points, while sophomore forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Dan Welch of Holy Family had 14 points and 13 boards, while Lancaster and Andrew Presner each scored 16 to pace the Tigers.

Next up for the Cougars is a CACC home game against Dominican College on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
