CALDWELL, N.J. - Despite 20 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore forward
Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata), the Caldwell College women's basketball team lost to Post University, 63-58 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday evening at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars dropped their seventh consecutive game to fall to 3-11 overall and 3-8 in the CACC, while the Eagles won their third in a row to improve to 8-5, 7-3 CACC.
After an even start the Cougars used a 14-0 run to take a 22-10 lead with 10:10 remaining in the first half. Caldwell would lead by as many as 15 points in the first half before the Eagles finished the half with a 7-1 spree to make the score 34-25 at intermission. Leary and junior guard
Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) each scored 10 points in the game's opening half.
In the second half, a three-pointer by junior forward
Amy Gaudious (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) with 14:45 left gave the Cougars a 41-30 advantage. But 12 straight points, including a pair of threes from Jen Rose, put Post in front 42-41 at the 12:18 mark. The Cougars regained the upper hand and led until Tadj Williams scored a pair of baskets to put Post on top 55-53 with 3:28 left. Leary tied the game at 55-55 with a lay-up at the 2:36 mark, but the Eagles got a basket by Stephanie Goss and a pair of free throws from Marjorie Prado to go up 59-56 with two minutes left. Leary's free throws cut the lead to 59-58, but the Cougars missed their final five shots as Post hung on for the win.
Leary's double-double was her second of the season and sixth of her career. She also added five assists. Coyle finished with 12 points. Prado tallied 19 points for Post, with Williams adding 17 points and 18 rebounds in the win.
Caldwell is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Cougars host Goldey-Beacom College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
