LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Sophomore midfielder Carla Bleiler (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) scored in the 98th minute to give the Caldwell College women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Georgian Court University in double overtime in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars haven't lost in six games and are now 4-1 in the conference and 6-3-1 overall. The Lions fell to 1-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the CACC.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior forward Renata Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Essex CC) off of a cross from sophomore Brook Delucca (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) in the 11th minute. The Lions tied the game in the 23rd minute on Erica Kaps' goal, then take the lead when Vanessa Piepsak scored in the 32nd minute.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of Georgian Court until the 79th minute, when freshman midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) notched her sixth goal in four games to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team was able to score during the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period. Bleiler gave the Cougars their second overtime victory of the season when she headed in a corner kick from freshman midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) with just 2:30 left in the game. The assist for Paknis, pictured, was her league-leading sixth of the season, while Bleiler notched her second straight game-winning goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie LaForge (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) recorded four saves in 63 minutes of work, while sophomore Jen Borden (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) made two saves while playing the final 34:30 of the game. Georgian Court's Jamie Kaiser, who was forced to leave the game with an injury after colliding with Rinks in the 80th minute, stopped 11 shots, and Melissa Rauth was credited with two saves in relief. The Cougars have now won three straight and five of their last six games.
Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Wilmington, Del., to face Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC game on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
