OAKDALE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost to Dowling College 5-0 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon. The loss ended the Cougars' five-game unbeaten streak and dropped their overall record to 5-2-1 on the season. The Golden Lions, ranked third in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division II national rankings, remained undefeated at 6-0-2.
Dowling opened the scoring in the 31st minute, when Guy-Roland Kpene placed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 20 yards out. Caldwell senior midfielder Chris Parshelunis (Brick, NJ/St. Rose), pictured, almost tied the game just before halftime, but his shot was saved off the goal line by a Dowling defender. The Golden Lions broke the game open in the second half with three goals in a three-minute span that was sparked by a penalty kick in the 54th minute. With the score 4-0 in favor of Dowling, Kpene notched his second goal of the game to close out the scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) made three saves in just over 57 minutes of work before giving way to freshman John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny). Nemanja Veljovic and William Grady combined to stop four shots for Dowling.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they play at Goldey-Beacom College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
