BLOOMFIELD DROPS COUGARS IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost to Bloomfield College, 92-53 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at Bloomfield. The Cougars, who were led by junior guard Becky Piper (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) with 10 points, fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Deacons improved to 1-1.

Bloomfield, which never trailed throughout the game, took control late in the first half with an 11-1 run that put the Deacons up 33-13 with 5:35 before halftime. The Cougars responded with a 9-2 spurt, including five points from junior forward Amy Gaudious (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch), that cut the lead to 35-22 before a basket by Renne Vales with 16 seconds on the clock made the halftime score 37-22 in favor of the Deacons.

The second half was all Bloomfield. Runs of 12-3 and 16-6 helped the Deacons build the lead up to 39 points, as Bloomfield made 55.6 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half. The Cougars, who held an advantage in rebounds, were hampered by poor shooting from the field (22.6 percent) and the free throw line (53.7 percent). The Deacons also forced 25 Cougar turnovers while committing just 12.

Piper, a transfer from Brookdale C.C., scored five of her 10 points from the charity stripe and hit a three-pointer in the second half. Sophomore forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and blocked two shots in the loss. DeAnjole Felton and Ciera Darby led four Bloomfield players in double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Felton added eight assists.

Next up for the Cougars is a home game against Nyack College on Saturday, Dec. 3. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
