Caldwell College's women's soccer team began the 2004 season at the Stonehill College Tournament in Easton, Mass., losing to LeMoyne College 3-0 on Sunday before falling 4-0 to host Stonehill College this morning.
In the season opener on Sunday, LeMoyne recorded goals in the sixth and 16th minutes of the first half to set the tone early. Junior goalkeeper Richelle Morse (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) made 14 saves, including nine in the second half, to keep the score close. LeMoyne's Sarah Jones scored in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring. Freshman midfielder Carla Bleiler (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami) led the Cougars with two shots, both of which were on goal.
Against Stonehill, Morse shared the goalkeeping duties with freshman Jen Borden (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham), and both were tested often. Morse made nine saves while allowing three goals in 67 minutes of work, while Borden recorded six saves with one goal against in her collegiate debut. Freshman defender Layne Viccidomini (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had three shots for the Cougars, who were outshot 30-8 for the game.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to face Holy Family in their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match of the season.
