CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College and St. Michael's College battled to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 2-4-1 overall on the season, while the Purple Knights, who are ranked sixth in the New England Region by the NSCAA, are 5-4-1.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard just seconds before halftime, when sophomore Victoria Aguilera (Merida, Venezuela/Saucon Valley) beat her defender down the right flank and sent a cross into the penalty area. Junior Renata Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Essex CC) then headed the ball into the net from six yards out for her first goal of the season.
St. Michael's knotted the game in the 69th minute, when Mary Lyon put away a rebound off of a shot from Devin Camerlengo for her third goal of the year. Both teams had scoring chances to try to take the lead late in the second half, but neither could find the net, forcing overtime.
In the second extra period, St. Michael's had a pair of good scoring chances when shots by Camerlengo in the 107th minute and Judy Cronin in the 110th minute both went just wide of the Cougars' goal.
Junior goalkeeper Richelle Morse (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) made nine saves, including five in the first half, as the Purple Knights outshot the Cougars 23-11 for the game. Laura Tuveson went the distance for St. Michael's in goal, making four saves.
The Caldwell College women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29, when the Cougars play at LIU-Southampton at 4:00 p.m.
