McINTYRE LEADS COUGARS TO SEASON'S FIRST VICTORY

NYACK, N.Y. - Freshman guard Corrie McIntyre (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park Regional) scored a game-high 18 points as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Nyack College 60-54 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night. The Cougars are now 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the CACC, while Nyack drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Caldwell led for most of the first half but never by more than five as freshman forward Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) scored eight points in the game's first 15 minutes to pace the Cougars. Nyack battled back, tying the game at 26-26 on a basket by Deb Roberson with 35 seconds on the clock.

The second half started with four lead changes in the first three minutes until a conventional three-point play by Leary and a three-point field goal by sophomore guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) gave the Cougars a 39-32 lead at the 16:07 mark. But Nyack went on an 8-1 run to tie the game again at 40-40 with 10:58 left. A basket by freshman forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), two free throws from Coyle and seven straight points from McIntyre put Caldwell up by 11 with 5:25 remaining. The lead would grow to 12 before a 10-1 run by Nyack brought them within three with just 2:23 left in the game. But clutch free throw shooting and another Freeman basket prevented Nyack from getting any closer as the Cougars held on for the victory.

Eleven of McIntyre's career-high 18 points came in the game's final nine minutes, while Leary finished with her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Leary also swiped a game-high five steals. Coyle scored 11 points and Freeman recorded eight points and nine boards for Caldwell. Roberson led Nyack with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Bloomfield College in an important CACC game. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
