RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Junior forward Alesha Clayton scored a game-high 27 points to lead Felician College over Caldwell College 66-56 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game Saturday night. The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-2 in the conference and 2-5 overall, while the Lady Golden Falcons improved to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the CACC.
The Lady Golden Falcons jumped out to an early lead behind the strong play of Clayton who finished the first half with 15 points. Felician held a 21-8 lead only to see Caldwell come back on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to five. Freshman guard Corrie McIntyre (Highland Park, NJ) keyed Caldwell's run with six first half points. Felician's Diane Burns hit two three-point field goals before intermission to give Felician a seven point lead at 32-25.Â
Felician held its largest lead of the game at 61-47 with just under six minutes to play only to see Caldwell charge back again. The Cougars got as close as six points, but could not come back any further. Felician received clutch free throw shooting from Clayton and Burns to secure the victory. Caldwell was led by freshman forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) (pictured) with a career-best 12 points.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 18, when they host the College of St. Rose in a non-conference game at the George R. Newman Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
