CHIEFTAINS HANDLE COUGARS, 62-35 AT STONEHILL TOURNAMENT

EASTON, Mass. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team completed play at the Stonehill Coca-Cola Tip-Off Classic with a 62-35 defeat to the host Chieftains Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 0-2 on the season, while Stonehill College starts the season 3-0 for the third straight year.

After Stonehill opened the game with a 9-0 run, a free throw by sophomore guard Jenn Murray (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) (pictured) and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) brought the Cougars to within 9-4. But the Chieftains took control from that point on, taking a 27-14 lead at halftime and leading by as many as 28 in the second half. For the second straight game, the Cougars were plagued by poor shooting, making just 12-of-57 from the field (21.1%) for the game.

Coyle led Caldwell with nine points, including 2-of-4 shooting from beyond the three-point arc, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman forward Dana Leary (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) grabbed a game-high eight boards as the Cougars held a 43-42 advantage in rebounding over Stonehill. The Chieftains' Rachael Wile scored a game-high 13 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Caldwell plays its first home game of the season next Sunday, Nov. 28, as the Cougars host Bloomsburg University in a non-conference match-up. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
