SPARKILL, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Carla Bleiler's (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami) team-leading seventh goal of the season allowed Caldwell College's women's soccer team to defeat St. Thomas Aquinas, 1-0 in a non-conference match. The win gives the Cougars a winning record overall at 7-6-1.
After a scoreless first half of an evenly played match, junior midfielder Renata Fonseca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Essex CC) found Bleiler with a pass at the top of the penalty area. Bleiler beat STAC goalkeeper Amber Rodriguez in the 59th minute for the only goal the Cougars would need. Bleiler also ranks first on the team in points with 16, while Fonseca has nine points on three goals and three assists.
Junior goalkeeper Richelle Morse (pictured) (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) was busy in earning her fifth shutout of the season, as she made 12 saves in keeping St. Thomas Aquinas off the scoreboard. Rodriguez made nine saves for STAC, as the Spartans held a 19-11 advantage in shots.
The Cougars return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they host Dominican at 3:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
