Claire Sacuk Matlon was the first in a string of outstanding women’s basketball players at Caldwell in the 1980s. A forward who excelled in the paint as well as on the perimeter, Matlon was the first Caldwell basketball player to score 1,000 career points. During her senior season, she averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game in leading her team to its first winning season in several years. Matlon also helped Caldwell rank among the national leaders in team rebounding that season.
"The best part about playing at Caldwell was the ability to keep playing," Matlon said. "We didn’t have a great team, but I enjoyed the camaraderie playing with a great group of young women and the relationships we created."
In addition to being a standout on the court, Matlon also was an excellent student, majoring in biology and earning NAIA Academic All-American honors as a senior in 1983.
Matlon and her husband Jim have two children, Janice and Kevin, and live in Whippany. She still plays basketball in an adult league.
