CaswellCALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell University senior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) was one of 15 Division II women's basketball players to receive Capital One Academic All-American honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. Caswell, who was included on the Academic All-American third team, is the eighth Caldwell University student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American.
A criminal justice major at Caldwell, Caswell has made the Dean's List four times and recently was chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Student-Athlete of the Month for November. Also a Capital One Academic All-District 1 honoree, she was Caldwell's recipient of the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year Award this year.
On the court, Caswell is having an outstanding senior season, ranking among the nation's leaders in scoring (12th) and rebounding (second). Through 28 games, she is averaging 20.8 points and 13.9 rebounds per game and leads all of Division II with 22 double-doubles. Caswell, who has led the Cougars to an 18-10 record and the CACC North Division title, eclipsed 1,000 career points on Nov. 30. She currently has 1,445 points and 896 rebounds in her career.
"We are so unbelievably proud of Emily for this accomplishment," Associate Director of Athletics and head women's basketball coach
Kristina Danella said. "She is a true example of a role model for all student-athletes by continuing to get it done on and off the court. Emily has not let anything hold her back, and when faced with tragedy and adversity, she has risen above and proved to be among the best in the nation."
Caldwell's other Academic All-Americans are
Claire Sacuk, women's basketball (1983);
Patricia Gasparini, women's basketball (1984);
Timothy Nellegar, men's tennis (2000);
Nicholas Harriott, men's soccer (2007);
Kyrie Timbrook, softball (2010);
Alyssa Calderon, softball (2014); and
Lauren Iuliucci, women's soccer (2014).
The Capital One Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted on by the members of CoSIDA. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated.
Caswell and the Cougars will host Goldey-Beacom College in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
